Members helped with the major habitat construction on the site in its early stages in the year 2000. The Pleasley Pit Nature Study Group then took over most of the routine maintenance of the site.

Working with Derbyshire Countryside Services on the development site, the Saturday morning working parties are helping to make it more attractive and friendly to both wildlife and human visitors.

Projects include

  • Installing nest boxes for birds and bats
  • Planting hedge to create mammal, bird and insect habitat
  • Mending fences to protect vulnerable plants and animals
  • Sown wild flower seeds and planted native trees
  • Built and maintained sluices to maintain water levels on site
  • Established reed beds and aquatic plants in the ponds

For human visitors the working parties keep paths mown and repaired and after consulting regular users of the park, have put up 12 bench seats at strategic places.
