The site is a former colliery spoil heap which was mined for many years. The pit buildings still remain and which are now classed as an ancient monument. This area belongs to the East Midlands Development Agency.
The 'nature' site consists of approx 150 acres all owned by Derbshire County Council, the majority of which is public access and overseen by the Pleasley Pit Nature Study Group, Derbshire County Council, Derbyshire Countryside Services, Pleasley and New Houghton Actions group and local wildlife experts.
