There is only one species of large mature tree on site. This is the Common Ash Fraxinus excelsior which is found in the old hedgerows.

The small mature trees and shrubs are Elder Sambucus nigra, Blackthorn Prunus spinosa, Holly Ilex aquifolium, The Spindle Tree Euonymus europaens.

84, 000 new trees and shrubs have been planted along with 4km of new hedgerow.

The quick growing pioneers such as Common Alder Alnus glutinosa, Willows Salix and on the better ground a few Oaks Quercus robur.

Planting of Dogwood Cornus sanguinea and Guelder Rose Viburnun opulus are adding autumn colour.

The Spindle Tree Euonymus europaens.

This tree, so called as centuries ago its hard, non splintering wood was used for the making of pegs, knitting needles, skewers and spindles. Today it is used for making high quality artisits charchol. The tree has an unpleasant smell when bruised and it's fruit is an emetic. This tree was found in part of Long Hedge Lane in 2001 and is an exciting find as Derbshire is more or less the Northern limit for this species.
