SPIDERS (Arachnida)

The class Arachnida include those animals with four pairs of legs, no antennae or wings and two body sections (fused together in some orders).
On Pleasley we have Orb Weavers (araneidae) which include Araneus Quadrates(Garden Cross Spider)which is found in long grass and on fences.

Araneus Diadematus or Orb Weaver  (taken by Martin Stubbs)

We also have a lot of Crab Spiders (Thomisidae), in particular Xysticus Cristatus found in grass seed heads.

In total to date we have identified 53 species on site out of a possible 634 of the species in Britain!
